Viking lifestyle
A Viking lifestyle was very hard but
rewarding. Food was very different to what we eat nowadays, the Vikings had to
grow and farm their food independently. They also had Thralls to do their
“dirty work”. The men spent a lot of time away from their farms at sea, trading
and raiding. The women had to take over and do the work of the men during this
time. The rewards for Traders, Warriors and Raiders included treasure,
artefacts, slaves and food from hunting.
It was very cold in Scandinavia and old Viking homes were mounds of dirt with fires inside. It would get very smoky and smelly because the fuel for the fire was cow manure. Vikings were very skilled in what they did there were a lot of jobs to choose from, but they were specialists in more than one skill. Their skills as craftspeople were in wood, jewellery, stone and ivory. They were also poets, storytellers and singers. Viking children grew up in a house hold with lots of people. They lived with their parents, Brothers, sisters, grandparents, unmarried aunts and sometimes slaves or servants. Children were considered old enough to be working when they were 5yrs old and were considered adults at 10yrs. |
