The Viking alphabet is called the Runic/Futhark alphabet and it is made up of straight lines because it is easier to carve. The Vikings used to carve it on bones, combs, rocks and weaponry. It was first called Futhark thanks to its first six letters.
Even though they had an alphabet and picture stones the Vikings did not tend to record their daily life by carving in stone. They used poetry, songs and the Sagas to record their history.
The Runes were thought to have had magical powers and could predict the future and be used in magic spells. They were often cast before heading off on sea voyages.
